Cobalt Blue Holdings Ltd is implementing a strategic leadership transition to support the company’s continued development and expansion.
Joe Kaderavek, who has served as chief executive officer since the company’s inception, will transition to the non-executive role of deputy chairman of the Board from April 30, 2025.
Succeeding him, Dr Andrew Tong will assume the position of CEO on May 1, 2025.
New developments
The appointment comes days after the company executed a binding pre-Final Investment Decision (FID) Consortium Deed with Iwatani Australia Pty Ltd to advance the development of the Kwinana Cobalt Refinery (KCR) in Western Australia.
KCR is poised to become Australia’s first cobalt sulphate refinery, supporting the nation’s battery materials supply chain and advancing Cobalt Blue’s position in the critical minerals sector.
In February, the company proposed a name change to Core Blue Minerals Ltd, aligning with its broader diversification strategy.
The proposal follows the company’s earn-in agreement with AuKing Mining for the Halls Creek Project in northern Western Australia.
Notable experience
Dr Tong brings over seven years of executive experience within Cobalt Blue, where he has played a central role in driving project development and aligning the company’s strategic and technical goals.
His deep familiarity with the business, combined with industry expertise, places him in a strong position to guide the company through its next phase of growth.
Kaderavek transition
In his new role as deputy chairman, Kaderavek will continue to apply his extensive knowledge and experience to guide COB’s strategic direction.
This adjustment in roles ensures that his invaluable insights remain a fundamental part of Cobalt Blue’s advancement
During his tenure as CEO, he was instrumental in securing cornerstone partnerships with LG and Iwatani Australia and played a leading role in achieving Federal Government Major Project Status for the Broken Hill Cobalt Project.
Chairman Robert Biancardi paid tribute to Kaderavek’s leadership, saying, “We are profoundly grateful for Joe’s visionary leadership, which has been instrumental in Cobalt Blue’s achievements.
"We look forward to his continued influence in his new capacity as Deputy Chairman. We also extend our hearty congratulations to Andrew on his new role.
"The Board has full confidence in his capabilities to propel the company’s growth and innovation forward."
First cobalt sulphate refinery
The KCR's expected position as Australia’s first cobalt sulphate refinery— a significant step forward in Australia’s plans to refine critical minerals and build new value-added industries.
The project is planned to be a significant enabler for the delivery of Australia’s Critical Minerals Strategy and is uniquely positioned to address the existing significant market gap among Australia’s critical minerals partners.
KCR is designed to produce high-quality, battery-grade cobalt sulphate for use as a raw material to supply the precursor cathode active material (pCAM) industry.
Consequently, this could support the development of pCAM production capability and capacity in Australia.
