Tryptamine Therapeutics Ltd CEO Jason Carroll talked with Proactive about the company’s agreement with Swinburne University to initiate the world’s first trial using TRP-8803 for the treatment of binge eating disorder (BED).
Carroll outlined two key studies that laid the foundation for this new trial. One involved oral psilocybin (IO2) at the University of Florida, which showed an 80% reduction in BED episodes and a similar decrease in patients’ sense of loss of control—both achieved with a single dose. The second involved TRP-8803, a proprietary infused psilocybin formulation, demonstrating that all subjects reached a psychedelic state within 15 minutes without requiring dose adjustments. The treatment was deemed safe and well tolerated.
The upcoming 12-patient trial will be led by Professor Susan Rossell and aims to evaluate the safety and impact of TRP-8803 on BED symptoms, including frequency of episodes, loss of control, food and alcohol intake, body mass index, and neuropsychiatric comorbidities such as anxiety and depression.
Carroll explained, “It is the most common eating disorder in the US, and second most common right here in Australia.” He said the company believes this trial has the potential to make the most significant early contribution to the condition.
Tryptamine also expects data from other ongoing studies—such as IBS and fibromyalgia—throughout the second half of the year.
