Google parent Alphabet lays off Android and Pixel workers

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has laid off several hundred employees from Google’s Platforms and Devices division, which includes teams working on Android, Pixel phones, Chrome, and other key products, The Information reported, citing sources.

The layoffs follow a voluntary exit program launched earlier in 2025, aimed at US-based employees who may not have aligned with the division’s evolving goals or hybrid work policies.

The restructuring comes after Google merged its Android and hardware units in 2024, to streamline operations and push deeper AI integration across its products. Reports also suggest job cuts are planned in Google’s HR and Cloud teams as part of a wider reshuffle.

Alphabet ended 2024 with 183,323 employees globally, a slight increase from the previous year.

Despite 12% year-over-year revenue growth in the fourth quarter, Alphabet narrowly missed Wall Street expectations. YouTube performed well, but Google Cloud revenue lagged, raising some concerns about slowing momentum in core areas like search and services.
