Anglo American working with Peabody after explosion threatens $3.8bn sale of Queensland coal mines

Anglo American PLC (LSE:AAL) said it is "continues to work" to complete the US$3.8 billion sale of its steelmaking coal business to Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE:BTU) after the US company said was "reviewing all options".

Peabody Energy issued a statement on Tuesday following an explosion, or what it called "an ignition event", the previous week at Anglo American's Moranbah North Mine.

The underground coal mine was closed after it was evacuated after what Anglo American called at the time a "small, contained ignition event" on 31 March.

Peabody Energy said it was "in conversation with Anglo American to better understand the impacts of the event".

In its own statement on Thursday morning, Anglo noted Peabody's missive and said it was working "with Peabody towards satisfying the remaining customary conditions in those agreements that are required for completion of the transaction".

The FTSE 100-listed said it is "making progress", working with experts and the Queensland safety regulator to look at restarting mining operations at Moranbah North.

It reiterated that it believes the incident was "a minor ignition", with conditions in the mine said to have "normalised shortly afterwards and they remain stable, with data and camera footage showing no evidence of damage".
