Altech Batteries Ltd CFO Martin Stein talked with Proactive about the successful completion of individual cell testing for the company’s CERENERGY® sodium chloride solid-state battery technology.
Stein explained that testing was carried out by Fraunhofer, a respected German government R&D institute and joint venture partner on the project. “They’ve done all the testing on the cells. They've come back really pleasing — better than expected,” he said.
The results confirmed the battery’s performance across key metrics, including thermal, charging, and discharging tests. A major differentiator, Stein noted, is safety: CERENERGY®’s solid-state design means “it can’t catch on fire and it can’t explode,” unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries.
Stein emphasized the importance of this safety profile for use in data centres, military applications, and energy-critical infrastructure where fire risk is unacceptable. He cited recent lithium-ion fires in California as an example of the stakes involved.
The update also supports Altech’s plans for a 120 megawatt-hour CERENERGY® production facility in Germany. “It’s just given us and external investors additional assurance that we have a very robust quality product,” Stein said.
Altech’s battery design also avoids critical raw materials like lithium, cobalt and graphite, making it less exposed to volatile supply chains and tariffs.
