Meeting financial needs
Beforepay has two core businesses — the domestic consumer lending operation under the Beforepay brand and Carrington Labs, its enterprise analytics division. The pay advance product, launched in 2020, remains the company’s primary offering. It provides small unsecured loans for short durations, with a fixed 5% fee and no interest or hidden charges.
The product aims to help customers manage short-term financial needs ethically and transparently. It highlighted that the average loan size is around A$400, with durations of approximately 62 days. The company noted it has written about 40,000 loans using a team of just 50 employees.
The company told investors that Carrington Labs uses AI-driven credit models originally developed to support Beforepay’s lending decisions. These tools are now being offered to third-party lenders, with expansion efforts focused on the United States.
From a financial perspective, the company said it became profitable in the first half of FY23. In the six months to 31 December 2024, it reported nearly A$400 million in loan advances and revenue of close to A$20 million. Net profit rose from A$2.2 million to A$2.8 million over the same period.
Beforepay also reported a significant reduction in net default rates, falling from over 3% previously to around 1.1% in the latest period. The company attributed this to continued investment in its credit risk model.
While the company’s core focus remains the Australian market, it said Carrington Labs is being scaled internationally. It also noted that a personal loan product was launched in November 2024.
