China hits back at Trump’s latest tariffs, warns of countermeasures

China has pushed back against sweeping new US tariffs announced by Donald Trump, warning it will retaliate to protect its interests.

The Commerce Ministry said the tariffs ignore years of global trade cooperation and the fact that America has long profited from international trade.

Trump revealed a hefty 34% tariff on Chinese imports, on top of an earlier 20%, bringing the total to 54%.

From Saturday, a 10% base rate kicks in for almost all goods, with higher charges starting from April 9.

Trump also closed a loophole that let low-value Chinese parcels enter the US duty-free.

Other countries aren’t spared: Vietnam, India and Mexico (popular alternatives to Chinese factories) face levies of up to 46%. That dents the appeal of moving supply chains out of China.
