Zinnwald Lithium wins high-level political backing in Saxony

Zinnwald Lithium PLC (LSE:ZNWD, OTC:ZNWLF) received a boost to its prospects on Wednesday after the Saxon State Government officially recognised its flagship lithium project in eastern Germany as “a project of outstanding importance”.

The state’s economics minister, Dirk Panter, said the mine plays a key role in reducing Germany and Europe’s reliance on foreign raw materials—especially lithium, which is critical to electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage.

Reducing raw material dependence is "crucial”, said Panter, adding that the project was vital for Saxony’s industrial competitiveness.

The state has now designated the mine a high-priority initiative and confirmed its inclusion in the coalition agreement between Saxony’s ruling CDU and SPD parties.

Zinnwald recently published a pre-feasibility study showing the mine could generate a pre-tax net present value of €3.3 billion and produce up to 35,100 tonnes of lithium hydroxide a year over a 40-year lifespan. The state government also plans to advocate for national support in Berlin.

Zinnwald CEO Anton du Plessis said: "We are delighted to receive this official recognition from the Saxon State Government, which underscores the importance of our project in helping to secure a sustainable supply of lithium for Germany and the EU.

"Its commitment to supporting the project at both state and federal levels further strengthens our confidence in bringing the Zinnwald Lithium Project to fruition.

"We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the authorities and stakeholders as we advance our plans to become a key supplier of lithium to the European battery and electric vehicle sectors."
