Apple and SpaceX clash over satellite spectrum rights: report

A dispute between Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL, ETR:APC) and SpaceX over satellite communication technology and spectrum rights is escalating, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

iPhone-maker Apple has invested significantly in satellite technology through its partnership with Globalstar, allocating $1.5 billion to enhance satellite-based features like Emergency SOS and Messages via satellite, providing connectivity in areas lacking cell service.

Per the report, SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, has urged the Federal Communications Commission to delay Globalstar's application for additional spectrum, arguing that the frequencies Apple seeks are underused and should be shared among providers.

SpaceX claims that exclusive access could lead to interference issues.

Meanwhile, both companies are competing for limited spectrum rights, airwaves to carry their signals, in the 1.6GHz and 2.4GHz bands.

Apple has sought exclusive access for its satellite services but SpaceX wishes to share usage to support its Starlink broadband network.

The report highlighted that despite the conflict between the two companies, Apple and SpaceX need to work together to expand their satellite operations.

Apple relies on SpaceX’s satellite launching capabilities, while SpaceX needs to work with Apple to make its products available on iPhones.
