SSE promotes chief commercial officer to top job

SSE PLC (LSE:SSE) has confirmed that Martin Pibworth will become chief executive following the company’s AGM on 17 July.

Pibworth has been with SSE since 1998 and currently serves as chief commercial officer. He has been on the executive committee since 2012 and joined the Board in 2017.

The integrated electricity infrastructure group said the appointment followed a competitive recruitment process and that Pibworth stood out as the “outstanding candidate”. He has overseen several parts of the business, including Renewables, Thermal, Energy Markets and Energy Customer Solutions.

Pibworth said: "I'm excited to be leading SSE as the company embarks on its next stage of evolution and growth... I look forward to continuing to work with governments, shareholders and other stakeholders on powering society's needs whilst creating sustainable value as we electrify the economy."

Current chief executive Alistair Phillips-Davies announced plans to retire in November. He will continue to lead the company until the AGM and then stay on as non-executive chair of SSEN Distribution until his departure later in the year.

Pibworth’s annual salary will start at £970,000 and rise to £1.05 million in April 2026. He will also receive performance-related bonuses and long-term share awards, in line with SSE’s new remuneration policy.

Phillips-Davies will be treated as a ‘good leaver’ under company rules. SSE said full details will be published following his departure.
