Poolbeg Pharma PLC (AIM:POLB) has just secured a key patent in South Korea for its experimental drug, POLB 001, which is being developed to treat severe influenza.
The patent protects the treatment until December 2038, adding to the company’s growing portfolio of intellectual property.
POLB 001 is designed to target p38 MAP kinase, a protein linked to inflammation. The drug could have wide-ranging benefits, not just for flu patients but also for people undergoing cancer immunotherapy, where it may help prevent dangerous immune system overreactions known as Cytokine Release Syndrome.
CEO Jeremy Skillington called the patent approval another step forward in making POLB 001 an attractive option for potential partners.
With the drug already at the Phase 2 trial stage, Poolbeg is positioning itself to bring much-needed treatments to patients worldwide while strengthening its market position through robust patent protection.
