Envirostream moves forward with discussions to boost battery recycling volumes

Livium Ltd has been working to grow its battery recycling division, Envirostream Australia Pty Ltd, by progressing strategic initiatives to expand recycling volumes and diversify revenue streams.

Livium CEO and managing director Simon Linge said: “We remain focused on growing volumes of end-of-life batteries to continue to improve financial performance over the short term.

“We are also keeping an eye on the future to ensure that we are scaled to meet the expected volumes over the coming years.

“We will seek to scale our operations through government support and strategic investment.”

Expansion of long-term agreements

Envirostream has started to receive initial volumes under new long-term agreements signed over the past six months, including those with BYD and ZECO Energy.

These agreements establish a baseline for transitioning from non-core batteries, such as alkaline, to lithium-ion batteries, aligning with the company’s strategic focus on high-growth, high-value battery types.

The company continues to develop its client portfolio, which includes Volvo, Hyundai Glovis, Wabtec, LG Energy Solutions, BYD and ZECO Energy.

Advanced discussions are underway for additional project contracts that could lead to volume growth in the coming months.

Alongside this, project-based agreements – often associated with events such as fire damage, product recalls, or regulatory compliance issues – have the potential to deliver substantial short-term volume increases.

Business development initiatives

Under the leadership of newly appointed general manager of Strategy and Business Development, Daniel Castro, Envirostream has been quick to take advantage of new opportunities for growth.

The company is actively engaging with international recycling firms to expand into higher-margin revenue streams, including tolling arrangements, battery diagnostics and safe storage solutions for new batteries.

Envirostream is also in discussions with leading 4PL logistics providers to establish safe storage agreements, enhancing its service offering and broadening its market reach.

Growth strategy

With the market for end-of-life lithium-ion battery recycling projected to reach A$122 million by 2030, Livium has outlined an expansion plan to increase its operational capacity and extend its footprint across Australia.

The company is in advanced discussions with the Western Australian government regarding an A$850,000 grant to support battery recycling facility development, with further grant applications submitted at the state level.

In parallel, Livium is exploring partnerships and growth funding options with strategic investors and financial backers to support its long-term expansion goals.

Through a combination of government support and strategic investments, the company is scaling its operations to meet the expected increase in recycling volumes over the coming years.
