Forestry and biomass specialist Active Energy (LON:AEG) will unveil a proposal for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the Ukraine government project at the New Ukraine 2015 Investment Conference in Kiev.
Active Energy’s plan is to commercialise the country's extensive timberland and forestry assets for a sustainable clean energy power generation option for Ukraine.
Ukraine has been effectively involved in a civil war for over a year with separatists in the east of the country that are backed by Russia.
Richard Spinks, Active Energy’s chief executive, said a PPP arrangement would enable the country to achieve energy independence and break free of its dependence on coal and gas imports from Russia.
Renewable energy currently accounts for 0.6% of the Ukraine’s electricity generation capacity.
Active’s wants to develop a national network of biomass-fuelled power plants using sustainable management of its forestry assets.
If the PPP proposal is accepted, AEG plans to construct and operate clean energy bomass power plants in partnership with the Ukraine state authorities.
A pilot project with the Ukraine State Agency of Forestry Resources (SAFR) would cover an initial 500,000 hectares of timberland in the country and be based on a similar project with the Metis Settlements in Canada.
"We believe that solar and windpower are now out of the equation," said Spinks, "hydro and Biomass are the future for the Ukrainian renewable energy industry".
