Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) has unveiled its first quantum computing trip, Majorana 1, marking a significant milestone in the quantum technology space.
This chip is notable for being the world's first quantum processor powered by topological qubits, which are engineered using Majorana particles.
This unique property allows for greater stability and resilience against errors compared to traditional qubits, which are often susceptible to environmental noise and interference.
The current version of the chip integrates eight topological qubits, with Microsoft planning to scale this technology to accommodate 1 million qubits on a single chip, comparable in size to conventional CPUs found in desktop computers.
Microsoft claims that this innovation could lead to quantum computers capable of addressing substantial industrial-scale challenges within a timeline of years rather than decades.
“Whatever you’re doing in the quantum space needs to have a path to a million qubits. If it doesn’t, you’re going to hit a wall before you get to the scale at which you can solve the really important problems that motivate us,” Microsoft technical fellow Chetan Nayak said in a statement.
“We have actually worked out a path to a million.”
Shares of Microsoft traded 1.3% higher at about $415 on the update.
