Japan has raised concerns with the US over potential 25% tariffs on car imports, following threats from President Donald Trump, according to Bloomberg.
Such a move would hit Japan’s economy hard, as cars are its biggest export, with the US as its largest market.
Chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said Japan is in talks with US officials and will carefully assess the impact before deciding on a response.
Foreign minister Takeshi Iwaya also raised the issue with his US counterpart, asking for exemptions from Trump’s broader tariff plans on steel and aluminium.
