Lithium Universe forges partnership with Polytechnique Montréal to bolster lithium processing in Canada

Lithium Universe Ltd has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with La Corporation de l’École Polytechnique de Montréal (Polytechnique Montréal) to advance lithium processing technologies and strengthen Canada’s critical battery materials supply chain.

This collaboration aims to foster innovation, research and education in the lithium battery sector.

The initial term of the partnership is five years, with the potential for extension through additional project agreements.

Through the MoU, Lithium Universe will work alongside one of Canada’s leading engineering institutions, as they look to develop local expertise in battery materials while promoting sustainable engineering solutions.

The partnership will facilitate hands-on industry experience for students and faculty, bridging the gap between academic research and commercial lithium processing.

Igniting innovation

“It is a privilege to partner with this prestigious university as we ignite innovation and cultivate a thriving lithium battery industry in Canada," Lithium Universe chairman Iggy Tan said.

"Together, we are committed to educational excellence and sustainable industry growth, shaping a future where Canadian expertise leads the global stage.”

A key focus of the initiative will be to support the onshoring of Canada’s lithium battery supply chain, ensuring greater self-sufficiency in critical minerals processing.

Through enhanced training programs and joint research efforts, the collaboration is expected to accelerate technological advancements and contribute to the growth of the country’s lithium sector.

With demand for lithium and battery materials increasing globally, this partnership positions Lithium Universe at the forefront of innovation, reinforcing Canada’s role in the evolving clean energy landscape.

"We are enthusiastic about this new, synergetic and innovative partnership that will enhance our educational and research mission towards a greener and more sustainable societal electrical energy future,” Polytechnique Montréal director of the Office of Partnerships and Research Infrastructure, Augustin Brais, said.

More about key objectives

The partnership aims to advance local expertise and innovation in Canada, particularly in lithium processing, achieved through joint research, innovation projects and educational initiatives focused on strengthening lithium processing capabilities tailored for the battery industry. The collaboration will also support research efforts to enhance lithium processing technologies.

Education and talent development form another core objective. The partnership will create opportunities such as internships, fellowships, co-op placements and joint academic projects to foster a skilled workforce. These initiatives are designed to promote diversity, entrepreneurship, and the incubation of start-ups within the lithium battery sector.

Strategic educational collaborations will also be established to facilitate the development and delivery of postgraduate and short courses. These efforts will include student placements and co-developed research projects, further integrating academic knowledge with industry practice.

Further key priorities include sustainability and commercialisation. The partnership will promote sustainable industry practices while supporting the transition of innovative research into commercially viable solutions.

By fostering new technologies, the initiative aims to strengthen Canada’s position in the global energy transition.
