NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) stated today that it is prepared to address the escalating threat of bird flu with its broad-spectrum antiviral drug, NV-387.
The company asserts that NV-387 is designed to remain effective against the H5N1 virus, even as the virus undergoes rapid mutations.
Recent reports have highlighted the evolving nature of the H5N1 virus. Notably, Nevada confirmed its first human case of bird flu in a dairy worker exposed to infected cattle, marking an extension of the ongoing U.S. outbreak. Since April, nearly 70 individuals, primarily farm workers, have been affected. The H5N1 virus has also significantly impacted agriculture, leading to decreased milk production and increased egg prices due to the loss of millions of laying hens.
Dr Anil Diwan, president and executive chairman of NanoViricides, emphasized the limitations of traditional vaccine approaches for rapidly mutating viruses like H5N1.
"Vaccines are not the right response for fast-moving viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 or H5N1, because vaccine deployment is at least 12 to 15 months behind the virus, when the virus has already moved on," Diwan said in a statement.
Diwan advocates for the development of broad-spectrum antiviral drugs that viruses cannot easily evade.
NV-387 has demonstrated activity against a range of viruses, including Coronaviruses (COVID), Influenza viruses, RSV, and Poxviruses (MPox/Smallpox). Its design aims to target vulnerabilities common to many human pathogenic viruses, potentially enabling it to combat a wide array of viral threats.
In stringent lethal animal model studies targeting Influenza A H3N2 infection, NV-387 has shown superior activity compared to approved antiviral drugs such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu), peramivir (Rapivab), and baloxavir (Xofluza). These findings suggest that NV-387 could play a significant role in pandemic preparedness and response efforts.
Diwan expressed confidence that the current administration will prioritize the rapid development and acquisition of broad-spectrum therapeutic drugs like NV-387. "We believe that the new administration will focus on rapid development and acquisition of broad-spectrum therapeutic drugs like NV-387 that the virus cannot escape, for the Nation's arsenal of antiviral weaponry," Diwan said.
The company urges health authorities to consider the lessons learned from past pandemics and to support the development of antiviral drugs that can address multiple viral threats simultaneously.
Diwan concluded, "A broad-spectrum drug that the virus cannot escape is an essential part of an excellent multi-pronged strategy for pandemic response."
Shares of NanoViricides were 1.5% higher in afternoon trading at $1.32 in New York.
