Cyan Holdings broadens South Africa reach with Adenco deal

Cyan Holdings (LON:CYAN), the smart metering and lighting control group, has been chosen by Adenco Construction as its preferred supplier in South Africa.

Adenco, an electrical construction company, will team up with Cyan to deliver smart energy solutions when it installs and commissions electrical and lighting contracts across the country.

The pair will also collaborate on emerging, related Internet of Things applications.

"In South Africa demand to deploy energy efficient infrastructure is growing,” said Bes Bezuidenhout, Adenco’s chief executive.

“Cyan's technology supports the management of energy consumption as well as demand side management to control peak load."

The agreement comes after Cyan signed a distribution deal in March with South Africa’s XLink Communications, which provides modems, routers, SIM cards and wireless machine-to-machine communication devices to 68,000 businesses in the country.

For those that aren’t familiar with UK-based Cyan, the firm specialises in smart metering – electricity, gas and water – and lighting control. All of it is connected by what’s called a wireless mesh network.

In practical terms, this means a module fitted inside the meter connects wirelessly to a central data concentrator, which then transmits the information via mobile phone network to a central ‘head end’.

The system works without the need for masts or expensive spectrum (the frequency at which Cyan devices transmit is free), making for a fuss-free, cheap solution.
