Market report: ASX closes lower as The Star turns down acquisition offer

The ASX closed 0.34% lower at 8,482.8 points on Monday, February 10.

Over the past five days, the index declined 0.58% and is currently 0.98% below its 52-week high.

The Star Entertainment Group was the best-performing stock, rising 13% to $0.125 per share.

Media reports on Sunday suggested that Hong Kong investors were interested in acquiring Star’s 50% stake in the Destination Brisbane Joint Venture, which owns The Star Brisbane integrated resort.

In response, Star confirmed it had received several proposals for its stake and other assets but rejected them, citing insufficient value.

Car Group fell nearly 7% to $38.36 despite reporting revenue and earnings growth in all key markets.

Its proforma revenue for the half-year ending December 31 was $548 million, up 12% from the prior period, while proforma EBITDA also increased 12% to $302 million.

Three sectors ended higher. Consumer staples was the strongest followed by utilities (+0.45%).

Information technology fell 1.38% after strong gains last week.

Among the gains made in the small cap sector were Cyclone Metals Ltd, which was as much as 11.54% higher than the previous close at $0.058 and Terra Metals Ltd was up 10% to a daily high of $0.033.

Other increases were made by Leeuwin Metals Ltd which reached $0.13, a lift of 8.34% on the previous close, Cadoux Ltd rose as much as 5.45% to $0.058, Peninsula Energy Ltd was six cents or 5.27% higher at $1.20, Dynamic Metals Ltd pushed 5.08% higher to $0.31, Tamboran Resources Corp lifted 4.77% to a daily high of $0.22, FireFly Metals Ltd increased 4.4% to $0.95 and Predictive Discovery hit $0.365, a rise of 4.29%.
