Ilika PLC (AIM:IKA, OTCQX:ILIKF), the British innovator in solid-state battery technology, has taken a major step towards commercialising its Goliath battery, designed to boost electric vehicle range, reduce charging times, and lower costs.
Working with the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC), Ilika successfully demonstrated that key manufacturing steps can be scaled up using existing gigafactory equipment—an important milestone in bringing these next-generation batteries to market.
Ilika’s CEO, Graeme Purdy, praised the collaboration, saying: “We are delighted with the teamwork at UKBIC, which has delivered an excellent outcome, demonstrating the large-scale preparation of Goliath electrolyte and the coating of our composite electrode-electrolyte.”
He also welcomed the UK government’s £2 billion funding boost for battery innovation.
The project, part of a £2.7 million Automotive Transformation Fund programme, aims to refine Ilika’s battery production process with partners including Mpac Group (a packaging and automation specialist) and Agratas (Tata Group’s battery division).
The team is on track to complete a 1.5-megawatt-hour battery assembly line by mid-2025.
According to Sean Gilgunn, UKBIC’s managing director, this progress demonstrates how the UK can lead in battery technology, saying: “Ilika’s technology is a great example of the kind of cutting-edge thinking which can drive the UK economy when properly supported.”
