Ondo InsurTech PLC (LSE:ONDO) told investors that Northumbrian Water to trial LeakBot, its smart leak detection device, in the North East of England.
The aim is to assess the potential for reducing water waste. It follows successful deployments with Southern Water and Portsmouth Water.
Northumbrian Water will conduct a pilot to evaluate LeakBot’s ability to limit customer-side water leakage.
"At Northumbrian Water, we pride ourselves on looking for innovative solutions to solve the challenges we face around water scarcity. We have been impressed by the results seen so far by LeakBot,” said Dawn Creighton, Northumbrian Water head of customer strategy.
Creighton highlighted the opportunity for LeakBot to be rolled-out to some 2.7 million Northumbrian Water customers, if the trial was a success.
OndoInsurtech chief executive Craig Foster, meanwhile, commented: "We're seeing increasing interest from water companies who have seen the positive impact LeakBot can have on reducing leaks and water wastage within a customer's home.
“We have a proposition which could scale quickly and really do something positive for both households and the environment too.
“We're looking forward to completing this pilot and discussing the longer-term roll out opportunity with Northumbrian and other water companies."
It builds upon LeakBot’s commercial roll-out, which has generally been led by partnerships with insurance companies, particularly in the United States.
Previously, in Portsmouth Water’s region, LeakBot reduced water leaks by 60%, saving approximately 24 litres per customer per day.
Southern Water projected potential savings of 9,200 megalitres per year if LeakBot is widely implemented.
