OpenAI has unveiled Operator, a new tool designed to enhance ChatGPT’s functionality by automating tasks such as vacation planning, form completion, restaurant reservations, and grocery orders.
Announced on Thursday, Operator is described as an AI agent that interacts with web interfaces, including buttons and menus, to perform tasks independently.
Operator can ask follow-up questions for personalisation, such as login details for websites, though users can take control of the process at any time.
Currently available to ChatGPT Pro users in the US, Operator will eventually expand to other tiers and integrate directly into ChatGPT.
OpenAI emphasised privacy options, including the ability to delete browsing data and opt out of training data collection. The tool enters a competitive space, rivalling Anthropic’s “Computer Use” capability, which enables similar automated actions.
The generative AI market, including players like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, is forecast to surpass $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.
