FTSE 100 continues record run; Aviva gains while easyJet descends - Market Report

London's FTSE 100 was up again in early trades on Wednesday helped by good rises on Wall Street overnight and keeping its record run going.

The blue-chip index added nine points to 8,557 with insurer Aviva and other financial groups leading the way.

EasyJet was the biggest faller as it indicated the revenue trend in its current quarter was ‘modestly lower, which outweighed a 7% rise in passenger numbers and reduced costs.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves' spending plans were under scrutiny again this morning as government borrowing in December was larger than expected.

Public sector net borrowing excluding banks was £17.8 billion, its highest level for four years.

Finally, Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin called for the government to reverse its recent tax hikes and stop 'subsidising dinner party goers' via pub customers.

Sales at the pub chain rose 6.1% in the three weeks at Christmas.
