Google pours another $1bn into Claude owner Anthropic

Google is deepening its partnership with artificial intelligence developer Anthropic by investing an additional $1 billion, adding to over $2 billion already committed.

This move increases the Alphabet Inc-owned (NASDAQ:GOOG) search giant's stake in Anthropic, known for its Claude AI models, which compete with OpenAI’s GPT.

The funding is part of a broader agreement between the companies, with Anthropic utilising Google’s tools and services.

San Francisco-based Anthropic has been actively raising capital to expand its computing infrastructure, with recent reports suggesting it is in talks for a $2 billion funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, potentially valuing the company at $60 billion.

Google’s latest backing comes amid intensified competition in the AI sector, where tech giants like Microsoft and Oracle are collaborating on large-scale projects, such as the $100 billion Stargate Project.

Anthropic and its investors aim to sustain momentum as the race to advance AI technology continues.
