TikTok is preparing to shut down for US users on January 19 unless the US Supreme Court grants an emergency appeal to block a law that could ban the app unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, divests its stake.
The law, which aims to address national security concerns, would take effect Sunday if not delayed.
Sources told Reuters that TikTok plans to display a message directing users to a website with information about the ban, along with an option to download their data.
The Supreme Court, which heard TikTok’s emergency appeal on January 10, has yet to rule.
TikTok and ByteDance argue that the law violates First Amendment rights, while the US government views the app as a national security threat due to its Chinese ownership.
The court’s decision is expected soon.
