GreenRoc flags Danish export fund interest Amitsoq graphite project

GreenRoc Strategic Materials PLC (AIM:GROC) has taken a step closer to advancing its Amitsoq graphite project in Greenland with a significant show of interest from the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO).

The fund has issued a non-binding Letter of Interest (LoI), indicating potential financial support for the project.

EIFO, which typically provides AAA-rated guarantees backed by the Danish state, has expressed interest in funding the purchase of equipment and services from Danish suppliers, including engineering firm FLSmidth.

This support would assist GreenRoc in moving Amitsoq closer to production, with the funding potentially covering pilot flotation plants, test work, and design costs for a graphite ore beneficiation plant.

Promising partnership

GreenRoc has been collaborating with FLSmidth for the past year, utilising the company’s technology to process samples from Amitsoq.

Work at FLSmidth’s US laboratories is focused on refining methods to convert Amitsoq’s high-grade graphite ore into graphite concentrate. This includes the use of FLSmidth’s REFLUX flotation system, which offers efficiency and sustainability advantages over traditional methods.

Stefan Bernstein, GreenRoc’s CEO, described the LoI as a key milestone. “It is my expectation that it will result in the provision of some of the funding which will allow GreenRoc to proceed towards the completion of our Feasibility Studies and eventually to the construction of our planned mine at Amitsoq,” he said.

Bernstein highlighted the importance of graphite, a critical mineral for battery production, in the global push for renewable energy. The EU has identified graphite as a strategic resource, and Bernstein sees the EIFO’s interest as a reflection of growing governmental and institutional backing for responsibly sourced battery materials.

Industry support

Peter Flanagan, senior vice president at FLSmidth, noted the broader significance of the project. “Bridging the supply-demand gap for critical minerals required for the global energy transition is a key priority around the world. GreenRoc’s Amitsoq graphite project is an example of a promising project that can help secure a more sustainable and resilient supply chain for this critical mineral,” he said.

The road ahead

GreenRoc’s next steps include working with EIFO to develop a detailed financing proposal. While the LoI is non-binding, it represents a significant vote of confidence in the potential of the Amitsoq project to supply graphite for the battery industry, addressing both global demand and the strategic aims of the EU’s critical minerals policy.
