Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NYSE-A:OPTT), a leader in ocean intelligence solutions, is making significant strides in its mission to deliver innovative surveillance, monitoring, and data solutions for maritime environments.
At a recent fireside chat with Water Tower Research, CEO Philipp Stratmann shared insights into the company's progress, emphasizing its operational evolution, cost efficiency, and expanding global footprint.
"Over the course of the year, we have continued to execute on the strategy we set out and communicated, which is to become an integrated provider of ocean intelligence solutions," Stratmann said.
"It’s all about enabling permanently forward deployed watching, listening, surveillance, monitoring stations, then providing information, data, and intelligence to autonomous and roaming systems like our vehicles."
Strategic growth and operational efficiency
OPT has focused on stabilizing gross margins, regional expansion beyond the US, and deepening partnerships, which have collectively bolstered its operational capabilities. "We’ve maintained that focus on our home market," Stratmann noted. "We’re a proud US company. We’re headquartered here, all of our operations are here, and we proudly support the US Department of Defense and other agencies of the US government in order to enable improved defense and national security postures at home and then for our allies overseas."
Stratmann highlighted a significant milestone for the company: converting its growing project pipeline into a revenue-generating backlog. "It’s been the year where the pipeline has started to convert more into backlog, and we’ve been able to convert that backlog into revenue," he said. "I think we’re going to start seeing more of that as we move into 2025.”
Stratmann also spoke about the company's commitment to cost efficiency. "We’ve really taken a hard look at our cost structure and delivered for our customers and delivered more for our customers than we’ve ever done before in the company’s history but did it with the lowest cost structure we’ve seen in years," he explained.
Cutting-edge technology and applications
Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) offers autonomous, renewable energy-powered buoys that operate in remote ocean areas. These buoys enable various applications, such as powering subsea and surface communication systems, including 5G nodes, Starlink, long-range WiFi, and military communication systems. Additionally, the buoys support vehicles and aerial drones, enhancing OPT's ability to provide comprehensive ocean intelligence solutions.
The company's innovations have enabled deployments like AT&T’s 5G node in Monterey Bay for the Naval Postgraduate School and Starlink integrations in other locations. These capabilities are further enhanced by collaborations, such as a recent partnership with SENAI in Brazil to explore new regional opportunities.
Financial and operational resilience
OPT’s service model has emerged as a critical driver of sustained revenue growth. "We like service revenue because the systems last way longer than typical lease or service contracts," Stratmann said. "As we continue to scale, you will see additional free cash flow being generated by the systems because on a cash-on-cash basis, the systems are paid off. Yes, there’s some maintenance cost involved, but then you can utilize that system two, three, or four times over on other projects, and that free cash flow generation just keeps on going."
With the resolution of a recent activist campaign, OPT is now better positioned to focus on delivering results for its customers. "What’s important is the fact that we have commercially available dual-use technology," Stratmann said.
Looking ahead
As the company moves into 2025, Stratmann expressed optimism about OPT’s trajectory. "We are comfortable in the situation that we’re in and how the cost structure is now set up. I think that’s the right way to do it," he said. "I think that’s how we’re continuing to stock up the pipeline at the top with new opportunities in the new region."
