JD Sports left with hill to climb after 'volatile' trading warning

JD Sports Fashion PLC (LSE:JD.) will need to give investors something to shout about when it updates on Tuesday, 14 January.

Last time out in November, JD Sports warned full year profit would be at the low end of expectations after “volatile” trading over the end of the third quarter.

Profit was expected to be closer to the £955 million mark as a result, against as much as £1,035 million beforehand.

The update, which cited consumer caution, unseasonal weather and the US election as hampering trading in October, had sent shares tumbling.

Little recovery has been seen since, leaving the stock at 97.9p and off its 2024 peak of 159.7p.

Deutsche Bank analysts noted JD Sports was likely to be among retailers having faced a “subdued” Christmas trading period.

According to the bank, JD Sports is forecast to report a 1% uptick in like-for-like sales over the key period.
