Biopharma’s struggles in 2024 could set stage for turnaround: analysts

The US biopharmaceutical industry faced significant hurdles in 2024, with both pharmaceutical and biotech sectors underperforming the broader market.

Despite the S&P 500’s remarkable 23% growth, the biopharma space struggled, with the DRG Index rising by just 3% and the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index Index dipping 1%.

The sector's struggles were especially apparent among small and mid-cap stocks, which failed to live up to initial optimism for increased deal flow.

Setbacks aside, Bank of America analysts remain optimistic for the coming year, seeing potential for catalyst-driven value creation.

The IPO market is showing early signs of revival, with companies like CG Oncology and Septerna as notable highlights last year. In January 2024, CG Oncology completed an upsized initial public offering (IPO) of 23 million shares at $19 per share, raising $437 million in gross proceeds, and in October, Septerna completed its IPO, issuing 18.4 million shares at $18 each, raising $331.2 million in gross proceeds.

For 2025, public biotechs are expected to capitalize on secondary offerings as positive clinical data is rewarded, although funding challenges persist, analysts warned.

Lower interest rates could improve the cost of capital and sector sentiment, but significant drivers such as more robust M&A activity, a fully reopened IPO market, and clarity on healthcare policy are needed to sustain momentum.
