Market report: ASX lower but resource companies trend higher

Market report: ASX lower but resource companies trend higher

Proactive’s Tylah Tully provides a market wrap for January 9.

The ASX closed 0.37% lower today at 8,317.8 points. Over the past five days, the index has gained 1.42% but remains 2.31% below its 52-week high.

Among the top performers, Arcadium Lithium surged 8.04%, adding $0.68 to its share price, while Northern Star Resources rose 3.42% to $16.61.

On the downside, The Star Entertainment Group plummeted 33.33% to $0.13 per share after reporting its available cash at December 31 had fallen to $79 million, a $70 million drop from September 30.

Sector-wise, Utilities was the only gainer, up 0.16%, while Industrials was the worst performer, declining 1.04%.

Among the small caps, D3 Energy Ltd (ASX:D3E, OTCQB:DNRGF) was as much as 23.64% higher at a daily high of $0.068 after providing an update earlier this week on its plans to provide a new energy source in South Africa.

Another strong small cap mover today was Percheron Therapeutics Ltd (ASX:PER, OTC:PERCF), which rose by 25% to $0.01 while archTIS Ltd increased by 11.48% to $0.068.

Other increases among the small caps were Lindian Resources Ltd (ASX:LIN, OTC:LINIF), up by 10.84% to a daily high of $0.092, Ora Banda Mining Ltd (ASX:OBM, OTC:ESGFF) hit $0.725, a 9.85% increase on the previous close, FireFly Metals Ltd (ASX:FFM) was 6.87% higher to $0.9725, Orthocell Ltd (ASX:OCC, OTC:ORHHF) maintained its momentum this week, rising 5.99% to $1.505, Polymetals Resources Ltd (ASX:POL) reached $0.92, a move of 6.35%, Tolu Minerals Ltd (ASX:TOK) climbed 6.29% to $0.845 and Peninsula Energy Ltd (ASX:PEN, OTCQB:PENMF) was up 4.17% to $1.375.
