eBay surges as listings to feature on Facebook Marketplace in Meta trial

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META, ETR:FB2A, SWX:FB) has announced plans to trial showing eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY, ETR:EBA) listings on its Facebook Marketplace in order to comply with a landmark European antitrust ruling.

Users in Germany, France and the US will see listings from eBay on Facebook and be redirected to the rival platform to complete purchases, Meta said on Wednesday.

This would give eBay access to Facebook’s vast user base and also allow a broader range of listings on Marketplace, the technology giant added.

Meta was fined US$840 million by the European Commission last November for allegedly gaining an unfair advantage over rivals by incorporating Marketplace into Facebook.

The commission noted at the time that Meta breached antitrust rules in “tying” its online classified service to the social media and by imposing “unfair trading conditions” on rivals.

Meta on Wednesday said it continued to dispute the ruling but that work was taking place over issues raised.

eBay shares surged 10.6% on Wednesday following the news, while Meta dipped 0.5%.
