NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) has highlighted the growing need for innovative antiviral solutions amid rising concerns over multiple viral threats, including H5N1 bird flu, COVID-19, RSV, and human metapneumovirus (hMPV).
The company is advancing NV-387, a promising broad-spectrum antiviral candidate designed to target a wide range of rapidly mutating RNA viruses.
NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) noted that this season, two genotypes of the H5N1 bird flu, D1.1 and B3.13, have emerged as significant public health concerns.
While the D1.1 strain has demonstrated severe pathogenicity, resulting in fatalities in the US and Canada, the milder B3.13 strain has been linked to infections in dairy cattle and human cases in California.
Other seasonal illnesses, including RSV and hMPV, continue to pose challenges, particularly for children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, underscoring the limitations of existing vaccines and therapies.
Dr Anil Diwan, NanoViricides president, pointed out the adaptability of RNA viruses, which can quickly develop resistance to vaccines, antibodies, and current antiviral drugs.
He stressed the need for therapeutics capable of maintaining efficacy against evolving virus strains.
“The situation is clearly crying out for the world to look for new approaches for pandemic preparedness,” he said.
NanoViricides’ NV-387 has shown preclinical efficacy across multiple viral models, including influenza, RSV, and coronaviruses.
Unlike traditional antiviral approaches, NV-387 leverages a host-targeting mechanism that mimics human cellular receptors, making it difficult for viruses to evade.
In animal studies, NV-387 demonstrated superior effectiveness compared to established treatments such as Tamiflu and remdesivir.
