Ilika PLC (AIM:IKA, OTCQX:ILIKF), a leader in solid-state battery (SSB) technology, is "quietly taking the lead in the global SSB race," according to Cavendish.
The report underscores Ilika’s success in pioneering ceramic-oxide electrolytes, which offer significant safety and performance advantages.
With applications ranging from electric vehicles (EVs) to medical devices, this technology positions the company as a key player in a market expected to exceed $8 billion by 2030.
Cavendish has set a price target of 83p, representing a premium of 291% to the current share price.
Twin focus
Ilika’s focus on two product lines—Stereax micro-batteries and Goliath large-format batteries—demonstrates its versatility.
Stereax batteries, designed for medical and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, have already achieved commercial viability through a licensing deal with Cirtec Medical.
These micro-batteries, praised for their compact size, safety, and ability to handle high peak power, are being deployed in applications such as pacemakers and smart medical implants.
The licensing agreement with Cirtec validates Ilika’s asset-light business model, where production is outsourced, allowing the company to focus on innovation.
Tailored for EVs
Meanwhile, Ilika’s Goliath battery is tailored for larger applications, such as EVs and consumer electronics.
The Goliath has reached energy density parity with today’s lithium-ion cells, while its non-flammable ceramic-oxide design offers superior safety.
Ilika plans to finalise a minimum viable product for Goliath by the end of 2025, with its scalable roll-to-roll manufacturing process ensuring commercial feasibility.
Cavendish highlights Ilika’s achievements as particularly remarkable given the challenges associated with ceramic-oxide SSBs.
These materials are inherently more difficult to develop than polymer or sulphide-based alternatives but provide better safety and energy density. Independent testing by DEKRA has confirmed that Ilika’s batteries are non-flammable, a crucial advantage for EV adoption.
Significant interest
Ilika has already drawn interest from prominent automotive and electronics companies, including Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, and Apple, with 17 firms currently evaluating its technology.
The company’s steady progress in overcoming technical hurdles, combined with its strategic partnerships, underscores its leadership in the global SSB market.
With its Stereax line already generating revenue and Goliath on track for commercialisation, Ilika appears well-positioned to capitalise on the growing demand for advanced battery technology.
Cavendish’s bullish outlook reflects confidence in Ilika’s ability to convert its innovation into significant market opportunities.
