Taylor Swift’s Eras tour and Oasis’s reunion meant a record year for UK music sales in 2024, according to the latest data from trade body ERA.
Sales hit a 20-year high of £2.4bn, up 7.4%, as demand for US megastar Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets Departed album rocketed.
That helped recorded music sales eclipse the previous peak of £2.2bn in 2021 when CDs were riding high, said ERA
Streaming services including Spotify, YouTube Music, and Amazon saw revenues rise by 7.8% to over £2 billion with a further £200 million spent on albums, up 10.5%, while CD sales were steady at £126m.
Tortured Poets Department was the biggest-selling album of the year shipping more than 783,000 copies were bought and with nearly 112,000 of them on vinyl.
Noah Kahan's Stick Season was the biggest single with around two million sales.
Kim Bayley, R ERA chief executive, said it had been "a banner year for music, with streaming and vinyl taking the sector to all-time-high records in both value and volume”.
Bayley added that sales last year were more than double their low point in 2013.
Trends away from music were more mixed with video up by 6.9%, and games down by 4.4%, according to preliminary figures.
Deadpool & Wolverine was the biggest-selling film title of the year, with sales of 561,917 of which more than 80% were online.
PC download-to-own sales were down 5%, digital console games 15% lower and boxed physical games slipped 35%, while subscription models grew by 12%.
Football game EA Sports FC 25 – the former Fifa, again topped the game chats notching up 2.9 million unit sales with 80% digital.
