The first US fatality linked to bird flu has been reported in Louisiana, marking a significant moment in the ongoing battle against highly pathogenic avian influenza.
The Louisiana Department of Health announced on Monday that an elderly patient with underlying medical conditions had succumbed to the virus after more than 20 days of hospitalization.
The individual contracted the virus, also known as H5N1, through exposure to a combination of a backyard bird flock and wild birds.
Unlike previous cases, genetic analysis revealed that the strain, identified as Influenza A H5N1 genotype D1.1, had mutated, potentially contributing to the severity of the illness. That mutation is significant because it indicates that the H5N1 bird flu virus is adapting in ways that could increase its ability to infect humans and cause severe illness.
This case underscores the evolving threat posed by bird flu. “The H5N1 bird flu virus from wild birds is rapidly evolving as it is contracted by humans; this is now established,” said Dr Anil Diwan, president of NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC), a clinical-stage company that is creating antiviral drugs targeting bird flu and other viruses.
Mutations found in the virus suggest it could evade vaccines and antibody drugs, Diwan explained. As well, other mutations indicate the virus could acquire resistance to existing drugs rapidly. In this scenario, traditional vaccines and antibodies may be ineffective.
NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC)’ antiviral candidate, NV-387, mimics the essential host-side feature that the virus requires for causing infection. Its ultra-broad antiviral spectrum makes it highly unlikely that a virus, even one as mutable as H5N1, could escape.
NV-387 has demonstrated superior efficacy against other influenza strains, outperforming existing treatments like Tamiflu and Xofluza in preclinical trials. NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) is advancing NV-387 into Phase II clinical trials, positioning the company as a leader in addressing emerging viral threats.
While the Louisiana case represents the first human H5N1 fatality in the US, other recent cases highlight the virus’s reach: a Canadian teenager recently survived a severe infection caused by the same genotype.
With mutations in the virus enhancing its ability to infect human cells, researchers are concerned about its pandemic potential.
“To combat such threats, we need to develop broad-spectrum drug arsenal that the viruses cannot escape,” Diwan added. “Vaccines and antibodies simply will not do.”
