Genflow Biosciences hails a year of innovation

Genflow Biosciences PLC (LSE:GENF, OTCQB:GENFF) has hailed 2024 as a transformational year, highlighting progress in its mission to develop therapies aimed at slowing ageing and combating age-related diseases through the SIRT6 gene.

The company, which focuses on the SIRT6 gene’s role in slowing biological ageing, highlighted advancements across its research programmes during 2024.

Backed by funding from the Belgian government and collaborations with leading scientists, Genflow said the past year marked significant milestones in its development pipeline.

Clinical preparations underway

A notable achievement was the progress of its gene therapy programme for metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a severe form of fatty liver disease.

Genflow has entered the pre-Investigational New Drug (pre-IND) phase and partnered with Belgian contract manufacturer Exothera SA to produce clinical-grade materials.

The company said it was "positioned to fast-track progress" towards initiating clinical trials, with regulatory compliance a key focus before production begins.

Innovation in rare diseases and veterinary science

In its Werner syndrome project, the company has developed liver organoids—miniature tissue models grown from patient cells. These lab-grown organoids provide a more precise alternative to animal models for studying the rare genetic disorder, enabling personalised drug testing and reducing reliance on animal research.

Meanwhile, a clinical trial aimed at extending the lifespan of ageing dogs is underway in collaboration with contract research firm Syngene.

The six-month study involves a veterinary version of Genflow’s gene therapy, with results expected by the end of 2025.

Depending on the findings, the company may seek licensing deals with veterinary pharmaceutical firms.

Focus on muscle health

Genflow is also addressing sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength. Its research focuses on mitochondrial dysfunction, a key factor in the condition. The company is collaborating with Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) to develop therapies that could restore muscle health.

CEO Eric Leire said: "As we prepare for 2025, we are energised by the progress we've made and the opportunities ahead.

"Our commitment to tackling ageing as a fundamental risk factor for chronic diseases remains steadfast. With continued collaboration and innovation, we are confident we will achieve great things in the coming year."
