Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL, ETR:APC) has agreed to pay $95 million in cash to settle a proposed class action lawsuit that alleged its voice-activated assistant Siri violated user privacy.
It was alleged Siri was unintentionally activated and obtained information from users which was shared with third parties without their consent.
A preliminary settlement was filed on Tuesday night in the Oakland, California federal court, which requires the approval of US District Judge Jeffrey White.
Members of the class action may receive up to $20 per Siri-enabled device.
The class period runs from September 17, 2014, when Apple integrated the “Hey Siri” voice activation feature that allegedly led to unauthorized recordings, to December 31, 2024.
Apple denied any wrongdoing in agreeing to settle the matter.
Shares of the iPhone maker fell 2.3% to about $245 late morning on Thursday.
