California has declared a state of emergency to address the widening bird flu threat as the virus spreads throughout the most populous state in the US.
“While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus,” Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement earlier in the week.
The virus, which has already affected numerous dairy herds across the state, is now also raising alarm after the country reported its first severe human case of the flu in Louisiana. While US health officials have stated that the risk to the general public remains low, the situation is quickly evolving, particularly in California, where over 60% of the state's dairy herds have tested positive since late August.
Several biotech companies are advancing efforts to develop vaccines and antiviral drugs targeting bird flu in humans leveraging cutting-edge technologies, including mRNA platforms and innovative antiviral approaches, to address the growing concern of avian influenza in humans.
In the case of vaccines, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA, ETR:0QF), backed by $176 million from the US Department of Health and Human Services, is creating an mRNA-based pre-pandemic vaccine for H5 avian influenza.
CureVac, in partnership with GSK PLC (LSE:GSK, NYSE:GSK), has initiated early-stage trials for an investigational mRNA vaccine aimed at influenza A (H5N1).
Additionally, industry leaders like Sanofi Pasteur, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, and Seqirus are actively developing vaccines.
Although some drugs are available, viruses resistant to these drugs have also spread. A few companies are developing new antiviral drugs to treat the viral infection. NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) is testing NV-387, a broad-spectrum antiviral with efficacy against influenza and bird flu.
While vaccines and current treatments remain the frontline defense, Anil Diwan, president of NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC), warns that existing solutions may not be adequate.
"We are delusional if we think vaccines and current drugs will be able to combat H5N1 effectively," said Diwan.
"Influenza viruses mutate at a rate far greater than coronaviruses, and the H5N1 strains now circulating are far from a single, uniform threat, with multiple phylogenic strains spreading simultaneously. These viruses recombine, reassort, and mutate in ways that leave vaccines and existing antiviral drugs highly vulnerable."
NanoViricides (NYSE-A:NNVC) is developing a novel broad-spectrum antiviral drug designed to fight viruses, including H5N1, more effectively than existing treatments. Unlike traditional vaccines, antibodies, and small-chemical drugs that are specific to particular strains, NanoViricides’ drugs mimic the virus's unique receptor sitem making it nearly impossible for the virus to escape their effects, even as it changes by whatever means.
The company has already demonstrated the drug’s potential in animal studies, where it significantly outperformed standard antiviral treatments like Tamiflu, Rapivab, and Xofluza.
The drug is designed to target a broad range of viruses, including coronaviruses and influenza strains, as well as the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, and it has shown remarkable activity against several viruses including Influenza, RSV, Coronaviruses, and even MPox, in animal studies, reinforcing confidence that H5N1 would not be able to evade its effects.
NanoViricides has completed Phase I human clinical trials, and the company is ready to proceed with Phase II trials to prepare for potential deployment against a future H5N1 pandemic.
"As we look ahead, we believe that our solution can play a pivotal role in fighting future pandemics," Diwan added. "Given the rapid mutation and spread of H5N1, a broad-spectrum antiviral is our best hope for controlling this potential global health crisis."
The company is now seeking support from both the US government and health agencies to expedite the drug’s clinical trials and make it ready for widespread use.
With California on high alert and fears of a broader outbreak looming, pharma companies are hoping to offer a new line of defense, should the bird flu continue to spread.
