Wetherspoon boss blasts Guinness owner Diageo for current shortage

JD Wetherspoon PLC's (LSE:JDW) outspoken boss Tim Martin has told Guinness owner Diageo to get its finger out and start brewing more to ease the current shortage of the black stuff.

In comments to the FT, the pub chain's founder and chairman said: "I'm going to be having a stern word with them and say: 'What's happened to your crystal ball?' I think someone at Guinness has made a mistake."

A resurgence in popularity in Guinness drinking by the young Gen Z age group has caught Diageo on the hop with pubs all over the country saying they are bringing in rationing to manage what supplies they are receiving.

Diageo has yet to put out a formal statement about the shortage but repeated its line yesterday from earlier in the month when the reports first surfaced.

“Over the past month we have seen exceptional consumer demand for Guinness in GB.

“We have maximised supply and we are working proactively with our customers to manage the distribution to trade as efficiently as possible.”

Shares in Diageo rose 0.2% to 2,540p.
