Renewables are expected to generate more electricity than fossil fuels for the first time over the course of a full year in 2024.
According to think tank Ember, wind, solar and hydropower will account for 37% of the UK’s electricity this year, outstripping the 35% from fossil fuels.
Wind power alone will make up 29%, while gas power use is set to drop by 13% as generation hits its lowest since 1996.
“The renewables future is here,” senior Ember analyst Frankie Mayo commented.
Fossil fuels had made up 46% of UK electricity production in 2021, when fossil fuels accounted for 27%, Ember said.
“With the phase-out of coal power completed this year, reducing gas use is the next big opportunity for the country,” Mayo added.
Britain's last coal-fired power station closed earlier this year following a rapid decline since 2012, taking generation to 0% from October.
Gas power generation has gradually fallen since 2016, leaving production in line to account for 30% of UK electricity this year, against 34% in 2023.
