Poolbeg Pharma’s POLB 001 could revolutionise cancer immunotherapy care, says broker

If successful, POLB 001 could remove a critical bottleneck in cancer immunotherapy by freeing up hospital beds and allowing more patients to receive treatment in outpatient settings, according to analysts at Shore Capital.

In doing so, it could position the Poolbeg Pharma PLC's (AIM:POLB) lead programme at the centre of a growing market opportunity estimated at $10 billion, they added.

A research note issued by ShoreCap on Monday highlighted POLB 001’s potential to prevent and treat cytokine release syndrome (CRS), a severe side effect of advanced cancer therapies such as CAR-T and bi-specific antibodies.

These treatments have significantly improved outcomes for patients with blood cancers but are limited by CRS, which affects over 70% of patients and requires specialist care.

POLB 001 is positioned as a potential first-in-class oral therapy that could address both prevention and treatment needs, offering a much-needed solution for a condition with few alternatives.

ShoreCap emphasised the importance of Poolbeg’s presentation at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual meeting, where new data reinforced POLB 001’s promise.

The study showed dose-dependent reductions in CRS severity and superior cytokine inhibition compared to adalimumab, a benchmark anti-inflammatory drug.

These results build on earlier phase Ib trial data, demonstrating POLB 001’s safety and efficacy in a controlled setting.

The company aims to attract a commercial partner to support further development, with phase II trials anticipated to explore POLB 001’s use as a preventative therapy in cancer immunotherapy patients.

Poolbeg’s focus on high-profile medical conferences, such as ASH, underlines its commitment to raising awareness of POLB 001 among potential collaborators and the wider medical community, according to ShoreCap.

Its analysts believe the latest data positions POLB 001 as a potential best-in-class therapy, offering a critical advancement in the treatment and prevention of CRS.

In morning trading, the stock was up 1.4% at 7.2p.
