Eli Lilly makes $3bn US investment as demand for weight loss drugs rises

Eli Lilly and Co (NYSE:LLY) has announced a $3 billion expansion of its manufacturing plant in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, driven by increasing demand for GLP-1 receptor agonists such as the company's Mounjaro and Zepbound jabs.

Construction of the expanded facility, slated to begin next year, will bolster Lilly’s capacity to produce injectable medicines. The project will add 750 high-skilled jobs to the current workforce of over 100 and generate more than 2,000 construction roles.

“This investment reinforces our ability to deliver medicines like Mounjaro and Zepbound to patients worldwide,” said Edgardo Hernandez, head of Lilly's manufacturing operations.

The drug giant's total investment in Wisconsin now exceeds $4 billion, marking its largest US manufacturing expansion outside Indiana.

The facility will incorporate advanced automation to accelerate production and ensure quality, reflecting the company’s commitment to innovation and addressing the growing global demand for diabetes and obesity treatments.
