Polestar nearing inflection point as deliveries ramp up, says Bank of America

Polestar is a pure-play electric vehicle manufacturer on the cusp of an inflection point, according to Bank of America analysts.

Polestar “offers pure-play exposure to the growing EV market, is nearing an inflection point in sales volumes, and is improving its earnings profile”, they said in a research note.

BofA highlighted increased production of Polestar's higher-margin CUV/SUV models, the Polestar 3 and 4, as a key driver of projected growth.

Deliveries are expected to rise from approximately 50,000 units in 2023 to 150,000 units by 2030.

The bank estimated an additional upside of up to 40% if EV demand accelerates or Polestar's new active sales model, leveraging dealer networks, proves effective.

Despite these positives, the automaker faces risks related to its Chinese ownership and potential changes to US trade and subsidy policies when president-elect Donald Trump takes office.

The path to positive free cash flow is projected to remain challenging, with sustainability not expected until 2029 or 2030.

BofA forecasts that Polestar will need an additional $3 billion to $4 billion in capital to achieve self funding.

The bank initiated coverage on the stock with a neutral rating and £1.25 price target.

Shares were swapping for a flat $1 at the time of writing.
