BT Group's Openreach and Elon Musk's Starlink increase UK broadband roll-out

BT Group PLC's (LSE:BT.A) Openreach arm and broadband rivals have expanded the full-fibre broadband coverage to 25 million homes or 83% of the total.

Excluding cable networks, the total rose to 20.70 million homes, or 69% of households, the latest report from regulator Ofcom showed, an increase from 17.10 million or 57% a year earlier.

Only 35% of households have taken up full-fibre broadband services so far, rising to 52% for rural homes, while for urban areas adoption is at 32%.

Satellite broadband usage more than doubled, with SpaceX's Starlink reaching 87,000 connections, primarily in rural areas.

Mobile connectivity also saw progress, with 5G now handling 21% of mobile data traffic and available outside premises to 95% of the UK, though 4G remains the dominant mobile technology, supporting 78% of traffic and covering 95% of the landmass.

Average download speeds in the UK increased from 170 Mbit/s to 223 Mbit/s in 2024, driven by greater customer adoption of higher-speed packages.
