AstraZeneca PLC's (LSE:AZN) Imfinzi (durvalumab) has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the first immunotherapy treatment for limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC).
This approval follows the successful ADRIATIC Phase III trial, which demonstrated a 27% reduction in the risk of death compared to a placebo.
The trial, involving patients whose cancer had not progressed after chemotherapy and radiation, showed that 57% of participants treated with Imfinzi were still alive after three years.
This marks a significant advance for LS-SCLC, a highly aggressive form of lung cancer with limited treatment options and poor survival rates.
Imfinzi is the first systemic treatment in four decades to improve survival outcomes for LS-SCLC. It is now approved for both limited and extensive stages of the disease, reflecting AstraZeneca’s focus on addressing unmet needs in cancer care.
