Nano One Materials Corp (TSX:NANO, OTC:NNOMF) released new details on a joint study with engineering partner Worley Chemetics that shows its patented One-Pot process offers significant cost and environmental advantages over traditional methods.
The comparative analysis revealed that the One-Pot process could reduce total invested capital and operational costs by at least 30% while consuming up to 80% less energy than conventional methods, according to a statement from Nano One.
The technology also eliminates sodium sulfate wastewater, potentially cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 50%, depending on energy sources and jurisdiction.
The analysis compared costs at two 25,000 tonne-per-annum CAM production facilities in North America: one using Nano One's One-Pot process and another employing traditional high-volume technology sourced from China. Estimates factored in equipment quotes, wastewater treatment, and industry-standard engineering practices.
While specific figures remain confidential for commercial reasons, Nano One and Worley expressed confidence in the results, which they say support their push to license the technology to battery manufacturers globally.
Laura Leonard, Worley Group President of Technology Solutions, highlighted the appeal of these findings to prospective clients. “As we continue marketing the One-Pot process, it’s compelling to see data demonstrating our competitive edge,” Leonard said.
“We are working collaboratively with Nano One on initial sales efforts while developing a detailed LFP CAM technology package for potential licensees.”
The One-Pot process integrates the production steps for lithium iron phosphate (LFP), including the combination of iron, phosphate, and lithium, while eliminating the need for precursor steps and sodium sulfate waste treatment. The streamlined method reduces production complexity, energy consumption, and environmental impact, according to the companies.
The Strategic Alliance between Nano One and Worley Chemetics has also completed the preliminary design and layout of a modular “design-one-build-many” production plant. This design aims to simplify permitting, construction, and operation while enhancing scalability.
Dan Blondal, CEO of Nano One, emphasized the market potential of the partnership.
“The economic rationale and business case for licensing One-Pot-enabled LFP CAM technology packages are rapidly coming together due in part to Worley’s industry-leading expertise and Nano One’s advanced work on LFP,” Blondal said.
“The Alliance is increasingly well positioned to provide a leading, cost-competitive, and environmentally focused solution for the production of LFP.”
Nano One acquired North America’s only LFP production facility in Québec in late 2022, integrating it into its operations and using it as a launchpad for its licensing growth strategy. The facility is supported by a $12.9 million award from the US Department of Defense and a C$2.8 million grant from Next Generation Manufacturing Canada for proprietary equipment development.
