Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) has confirmed it is building a huge artificial intelligence-powered supercomputer utilising its Trainium chips in an attempt to dislodge rival Nvidia from pole position in the AI chip business.
Known as Project Rainier, Amazon’s web services arm said the “Ultracluster,” would be made up of hundreds of thousands of Trainium chips as well as a new server.
AI startup partner Anthropic will use the computer for training AI models, Amazon added.
"Together with Anthropic, AWS is building an EC2 UltraCluster of Trn2 UltraServers—named Project Rainier—containing hundreds of thousands of Trainium2 chips and more than 5x the number of exaflops used to train their current generation of leading AI models," Amazon said in its statement.
Amazon recently invested US$4 billion into Anthropic.
Web arm AWS also unveiled a new server called Ultraserver, made up of 64 of its own interconnected chips alongside a new suite of Nova AI products at its annual re:Invent conference in Las Vegas Tuesday.
In an event jam-packed with news, Amazon also confirmed Apple has signed up as one of its latest chip customers.
Amazon shares were 0.7% higher in premarket trading.
