Allergy Therapeutics unveils encouraging early data from peanut trial

Allergy Therapeutics PLC (AIM:AGY, OTC:AGYTF) has announced encouraging interim findings from its phase I/IIa VLP Peanut PROTECT trial aimed at addressing peanut allergies using a nanoparticle-based treatment.

The study’s early data shows that VLP Peanut could reduce sensitivity to peanuts and lower allergic reactions.

The analysis focused on 12 patients divided into three groups. A key finding was a dose-dependent reduction in skin sensitivity to peanut allergens.

Patients receiving VLP Peanut experienced a 48% reduction in wheal size (the raised area on the skin caused by an allergen) during skin-prick tests, compared to an 8% reduction in those on a placebo.

Blood tests revealed additional benefits, with patients showing a reduction in basophil reactivity - cells involved in allergic responses - and an increase in protective antibodies that may block allergic reactions.

These biomarkers suggest the treatment can stimulate the immune system while simultaneously reducing allergic reactions.

The trial is testing a nanoparticle approach to immunotherapy, which delivers small doses of peanut proteins to help desensitise patients without triggering severe reactions. No significant safety concerns have been reported so far.

Chief executive Manuel Llobet said: "These initial efficacy results mark an important milestone for our peanut allergy programme.

"The consistency in immunological response seen at these early doses is particularly encouraging.

"Combined with the positive safety profile, this data supports our plans to progress to higher doses in the remaining cohorts as we work towards identifying an optimal therapeutic dose for phase II development."
