Ocean Power Technologies’ operational efficiencies and strategic wins drive shareholder optimism

Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NYSE-A:OPTT) has captured investor attention this week with the preliminary release of its fiscal second quarter financial results.

Shares of the provider of intelligent maritime solutions have added 87% in the last five days, jumping to $0.38 per share from $0.20.

With the release of its preliminary results, OPT reaffirmed that it expects to achieve profitability by the fourth quarter of 2025, supported by growing demand for its products and services. This includes expanding its footprint internationally and targeting sectors such as national security and critical infrastructure.

OPT’s leadership team emphasized that it remains focused on converting its pipeline of opportunities into bookings and revenues, which could sustain long-term growth.

Highlights from the early Q2 results included record quarterly revenues of $2 million, more than double the $0.9 million posted for the same period last year.

The company also made significant strides in cost efficiency, reducing operating expenses by 40% through improved cost management and lower reliance on third-party services. This, combined with a reduction in cash used for operations, from $7.5 million to $4.7 million, allowed OPT to narrow its net loss to $4 million, compared to $7.2 million a year earlier.

Investors are also likely excited by OPT’s strategic process during the quarter.

The company deployed its autonomous WAM-V surface vehicles for the US Navy’s Project Overmatch, a vital national security initiative, and delivered additional vehicles for commercial survey projects in Latin America.

Since the quarter-end, OPT has also received approval to deploy its PowerBuoy system with AT&T’s 5G technology in Monterey Bay, demonstrating OPT’s focus on advancing maritime connectivity and infrastructure.

The combination of a clear path to profitability, record-breaking revenue, improved efficiency, and strategic wins have underscored OPT's steady progress toward leadership in advanced maritime solutions, driving investor confidence and the stock's recent uptick.
