BAE Systems PLC (LSE:BA.) is to build a new factory in Sheffield making artillery equipment and munitions creating what it said will be 50 highly skilled jobs.
“Our aim is to deliver long-term artillery capabilities for the UK, which will safeguard, sustain and grow a critical, specialised British industrial capability as well as provide important opportunities for exports,” said John Borton, managing director of BAE Systems’ Weapons Systems UK business.
Artillery shells stockpiles in the West have been depleted due to the need to supply Ukraine in its war with Russia.
BAE added that the £25 million Sheffield investment follows a £300 million in its shipbuilding facilities in Glasgow, £200 million on its UK munitions business, and a £220 million new factory in Rochester, Kent.
The Sheffield site is expected to come on stream in 2025.
BAE shares dropped 1.8% to 1,291p.
